For a site to have any hope of drawing in all-important search engine traffic a webmaster must actively work to improve the search engine ranking for their site.

With more and more web sites appearing online everyday it has become increasingly difficult for a site to be found within the first few pages of the search engine results. When the Internet was still young, getting a web site onto the first page of a search engine didn't take very much effort.

Sometimes, just publishing the site online was all that was required for a site to enjoy an excellent search engine ranking. Today, however, the Internet has become so crowded that webmasters must do everything that they can to make their sites rise to the top of the SERPs.

It Begins with a Listing in the Search Engines

A web site can't achieve a good search engine ranking if it doesn't even appear in the search listings. It should, therefore, be a webmasters first objective to get their site listed in the search engines. A webmaster may think that this requires setting aside a few hours to submit their URL to the top engines, but that wouldn't be the most productive plan. Instead they should save the time and effort because there is a much easier and faster way attract spiders and get a site listed in the search engines.

Tailor Content to the Search Engine Spiders

Once a spider has arrived at a web site, it will then set about to devour the site's content and determine its usefulness to viewers. This is done by testing the content against the spider's algorithm. Once this process is complete, the spider will assign a ranking to each page of the site. A page that is determined to be of high value will obviously enjoy better search engine ranking than one that the spider deems to be of low quality.

A webmaster can increase the odds of receiving better page ranking by making each page search engine friendly. A webmaster hoping to rise to the top of the search engine results must apply some search engine optimization techniques to every page of their site. That means, when creating their site and content, they must always be mindful of keywords, page titles, subtitles, and image names.

Meta Tags Still Carry Weight With the Search Engines

Back in the 90s and early 00s, meta tags were a vital part of achieving a decent search engine ranking. As the years progressed, however, they lost a significant amount of their importance. That was due, largely, to the fact that they were abused by many webmasters who would stuff the meta tags with anything and everything just in the hope of ranking well.

While meta tags may not carry the same weight that they once did that doesn't mean that they should be ignored. There are two, in particular, that are still worth including within the code of every page. They are Meta Description and Meta Keyword. The description meta tag should include a well-thought out sentence or two that serves to inform potential visitors what they will find should they click-through. It is also advisable to weave a keyword or two within this descriptive text.

When it comes to the keyword meta tag, care should be taken to avoid going overboard. Only keywords that are absolutely relevant should be included and, even so, the number of keywords entered should be kept to a minimum.

It should be noted that Wordpress bloggers will need to install a plugin to make use of the Meta Description and Meta Keyword tags. That is just one of the special considerations that need to be addressed by bloggers when attempting to optimize Wordpress for search in the hope of archiving a better search engine rank.

Achieving a Good Search Engine Ranking Isn't an Impossible Feat

Improving a site's position in the search engine results pages isn't as difficult as some would believe. It just takes a commitment on the part of the webmaster to take a more active role in determining their site's fate.
