Most people turn to the search engines when they are looking for information. For that reason, the success of a web site hinges on ranking well in the search results.

A webmaster can greatly improve the odds of their pages ranking well in the search engines with website optimization. Specifically, they should engage in keyword SEO in order to make their content attractive to search engine crawlers and spiders.

If a webmaster does adopt this practice, however, they must then take care to also ensure that all of their content is still of only the highest quality and appealing to human readers. Maintaining a balance that satisfies both robot and reader is the key to successful keyword optimization.

Don't Sacrifice Quality for Keyword Optimization

So, how does a webmaster strike the perfect balance between keyword optimization and high quality content? To begin, they must ensure that they are not sacrificing the quality of their content in order to attract the search engines.

Keyword-stuffing is the fastest way to alienate readers and doing so will also destroy any hope that a webmaster might have of receiving in-bound links because their content will be viewed poorly by fellow web site owners. Destroying their chances at receiving in-bound links is especially bad because they are one very important ingredient for achieving a high ranking.

Keyword SEO Requires Research and Planning

After first determining what the subject will be for a particular piece of content the webmaster should then conduct some keyword research. Ideally, they should identify no more than two keywords, or keyword phrases, for which they would like their page to rank highly in the search engines. These keywords must then be incorporated within certain key areas. These areas include the following:

  • Page Title
  • Content title and subtitles
  • URL
  • The content itself
  • Anchor text
  • Image alt tags
  • Image filenames
  • Image captions

While those areas are all recommended places for keyword placement it isn't absolutely required that each contain a keyword. The areas where a webmaster decides to place keywords will really depend upon their content, and the keywords that they have selected, as placement should always seem appropriate. They should also be sure to shoot for a keyword density of around 2% - 8%. Anything less and their keyword optimization efforts will be largely pointless while anything more will destroy the quality of their content.

Invest the Time in Keyword Optimization to Reap the Rewards

A webmaster who invests the time required for keyword optimization should soon be rewarded with higher ranking pages. Writing keyword-rich content may appear overly difficult at first, but, when this technique is put into regular practice, the benefits will certainly be worth the extra effort.
